Kurtley Beale returns to Australia’s northern tour squad

Kurtley Beale has been recalled to Australia’s rugby squad after Hunter Paisami withdrew for personal reasons. Coach Les Kiss also added James Ramm and Kalani Thomas for the northern tour. Beale has 95 Test appearances, but playing in November would mark his first international appearance for Australia since 2021.

Beale replaces Paisami in the touring group

Kurtley Beale has returned to the Wallabies, Australia’s national rugby union squad, for the northern tour after Hunter Paisami withdrew for personal reasons. Coach Les Kiss added Beale alongside James Ramm and Kalani Thomas. The recall ends a two-year spell outside the squad for Beale, who has played 95 Tests. If he takes the field in the November internationals, it will be his first Test appearance for Australia since 2021.[1], [2]

Kiss said Beale would mainly cover inside centre, a midfield position in the backline, while remaining available for other backline roles. The coach pointed to his recent form for Western Force, the Australian club with which he had played in the Super Rugby AUS final. Earlier the same day, Force announced a season-long training and trial agreement with Beale. His place in the touring group does not itself name him in any match side.[1]

Ramm brings experience of British club rugby

Ramm has yet to play a senior Test for Australia. He previously played for Northampton Saints in England and helped Northland reach a domestic competition final in New Zealand. He has signed with Western Force for the coming Super Rugby Pacific season. Kiss said the coaches had followed him for some time and highlighted his recent Northland form, familiarity with Britain and ability to play across several backline positions.[1]

Thomas joins after the United States programme

Thomas will join the main squad when Australia A, the country’s second representative team, finish their programme of tour matches in the United States. He adds to a scrum-half group initially containing Ryan Lonergan, Tate McDermott and Teddy Wilson. That position supplies the ball from the forwards to the backline; Thomas joins those options after completing his Australia A commitments rather than departing with the whole group at the outset.[1]

The Wallabies are due to leave for Britain on Saturday. Their northern schedule includes England, Scotland and Wales, followed by the Nations Championship finals weekend.[1]
