Chelsea break through after a goalless half

Chelsea beat Roma 2–0 in the league phase of the Women’s Champions League, the European club competition. The teams reached half-time without a goal before Chelsea scored twice after the break. Sonia Bompastor had made five changes to the starting team from the previous match against Crystal Palace. Early on, Alyssa Thompson struck the crossbar, while Roma also sought an opening through Giada Greggi without breaking the deadlock.[1], [2]

Carpenter scores six minutes after coming on

Ellie Carpenter replaced Thompson at half-time, with Sjoeke Nüsken coming on for Lauren James. Carpenter then combined with Wieke Kaptein to open the scoring in the 51st minute. After playing the ball to Kaptein, she continued into the penalty area to meet the return pass and finish. Chelsea later introduced Melvine Malard for Aggie Beever-Jones and Keira Walsh for Erin Cuthbert as they looked for a second goal.[1]

Buchanan’s late header takes Chelsea to seven points

Roma threatened through Alayah Pilgrim but did not equalise. Kadeisha Buchanan headed in Kaptein’s corner in the 89th minute to double Chelsea’s lead. Kaptein supplied the final pass for both goals, first in open play and then from a corner. Chelsea ended their third match with seven points. Their place in the standings at that point remained dependent on the results of the round’s later matches.[1]
