Two penalties bring a level first half
Liverpool eliminated Chelsea in the fourth round of the English League Cup at Anfield, winning the penalty shootout 6–5 after a 1–1 draw. Chelsea went ahead through Morgan Rogers in the 40th minute after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moises Caicedo inside the area. Liverpool answered three minutes later. Wesley Fofana handled the ball at a corner, and Cody Gakpo converted the resulting penalty to bring the hosts level before half-time.[1], [2]
Goalkeepers prevent a second-half winner
Neither side added to the score after the break. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders kept out Ronald Araujo’s header, while Liverpool’s Giorgi Mamardashvili denied Rogers and substitute Marco Palestra. Chelsea had made four changes from the team that faced Tottenham. Defender Maxence Lacroix went off injured before the interval and Levi Colwill replaced him. Late defensive blocks helped Chelsea keep the game level and take the tie to penalties.[1]
Gomez scores before Fofana misses
In the shootout, Valentin Barco hit the post and Kostas Tsimikas fired over. Jordan Henderson and Colwill converted, then Penders saved Gravenberch’s attempt and Mamardashvili stopped Emmanuel Emegha. Joe Gomez put Liverpool ahead once more. Fofana’s effort went over the bar, ending the extended shootout and sending Liverpool into the quarter-finals. Chelsea’s cup campaign ended with that final missed kick.[1]
