Snyder wins a tied quarterfinal on criteria
Kyle Snyder of the United States defeated Russia’s Abdulrashid Sadulaev in the 97 kilogram quarterfinal at the world wrestling championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. Their match finished 4–4, with Snyder advancing on criteria. The meeting took place during the morning session, before the remaining semifinal matches on the championship programme.[1], [2]
A late takedown and stepout erase the deficit
Snyder trailed 4–1 in the second period. A takedown and a stepout point in the closing minute brought him level, and the criteria decision sent him through. Sadulaev still leads their World and Olympic meetings 3–2. Snyder’s next opponent was Poland’s Zbigniew Baranowski, with the winner of that semifinal taking a place in the 97 kilogram gold-medal bout.[1], [2]
A later semifinal win puts Snyder into the final
Snyder subsequently beat Baranowski 5–0 to reach his second consecutive world final. A takedown with his opponent on the activity clock gave him a 3–0 lead, before two second-period stepouts completed the score. The defending champion is pursuing a fifth world title. Japan’s Arash Yoshida is his final opponent; Snyder beat him in the previous year’s world semifinal.[1]
