Trial date overlaps the European Championship
England forward Ivan Toney faces trial in 2028 over an alleged nightclub assault and denies the charge.[1], [2]
England forward Ivan Toney denied an assault charge at Southwark Crown Court in London, where a trial date of 12 June 2028 was set. The proceedings concern an alleged assault at a nightclub in Soho, an area of central London. The date falls during the group stage of Euro 2028, the European football championship. Toney was released on unconditional bail.[1]
Prosecutors allege a nightclub assault
The allegation dates to 6 December 2025. Prosecutors accuse Toney of headbutting and punching Saber Da Silva during a confrontation. At an earlier hearing at Westminster magistrates court in October, prosecutor Tom Heslop alleged that Da Silva suffered injuries to his nose and fingers. Toney pleaded not guilty and requested a crown court trial. The footballer continues to contest the charge; the hearing scheduled the case for trial.[1]
Court workload means a 20-month wait
The judge apologised for the 20-month wait, citing pressure on the criminal courts. Toney was instructed to stay in regular contact with his solicitors. He was also warned that failing to attend court could itself be a criminal offence and that the trial could proceed in his absence. The forward plays for Al-Ahli, a Saudi Arabian club. He has 10 England caps, including appearances in the World Cup semi-final against Argentina and the third-place match against France.[1]
