Estêvão remains in Chelsea’s plans
Chelsea coach Xabi Alonso dismissed the prospect of a January loan for Brazilian winger Estêvão Willian. Before the Manchester United fixture, Alonso said no discussions had taken place about sending the player elsewhere for more minutes. Estêvão had been an unused substitute in the League Cup game against Liverpool.[1], [2]
Alonso takes responsibility for minutes
Alonso praised the youngster’s work in training and his attitude. He said he understood players’ desire to play and took responsibility when his selections left them short of minutes. He wanted every squad member ready to contribute in any match. Estêvão is in his second year in English football after arriving from Palmeiras; a hamstring injury last season interrupted his World Cup ambitions.[1]
Development covers decisions and positioning
The coach described adaptation as work both in and out of possession. Choosing when to retain the ball or make a pass mattered alongside competitiveness without it. Alonso said the Premier League’s tempo made the adjustment demanding for a teenager and that mistakes were part of learning. He also discussed roles: Estêvão had shown good moments in wide one-on-one situations and could play inside as a number ten depending on the opponent and match context. Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers have occupied those inside attacking positions.[1]
