Villa ends its announced legal response
Aston Villa has withdrawn its threat of legal action against Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool defender who now works as a Sky Sports pundit. The decision followed his apology to the club, its owners and supporters. Villa had announced on Friday that it intended to act over remarks it described as unacceptable insults.[1], [2]
Villa had not initiated legal proceedings in the interval. Its latest decision ends the threat it had announced after the broadcast.[1]
Emery discussion prompted the dispute
On the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher discussed Villa manager Unai Emery as a possible replacement for Michael Carrick at Manchester United. He then told Villa fans to be quiet when they criticised him. Carragher argued that a hierarchy exists between clubs and suggested that Emery would want to manage a major club again.[1]
Carragher apologises for his language
Carragher posted his apology on social media on Saturday. He described his language as clumsy and wrong, saying he had intended a joke but understood it had not come across that way. Emery joined Villa in 2022 after previously managing Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal. The podcast comments concerned Carragher’s view of the manager’s ambitions.[1]
