Yamal scores before Villa can settle

Barcelona ended Aston Villa’s unbeaten start to the Champions League league phase with a 3-0 home win. Lamine Yamal put the hosts ahead after seven minutes at the Camp Nou, before two second-half goals from Raphinha completed the scoring. Villa had arrived after three wins from three, with nine points. Unai Emery’s side suffered its first defeat in this season’s competition on the fourth matchday.[1], [2]

Villa’s chances bring no equaliser

Yamal’s goal followed a misplaced pass from João Gomes inside the penalty area. Villa responded with opportunities for Matty Cash, Gomes and Johan Manzambi. Nicolas Jackson also forced Joan García to intervene. At the opposite end, Zion Suzuki kept out Anthony Gordon’s effort. Barcelona retained its narrow lead through an open first half, despite Villa finding ways into the home penalty area.[2]

Raphinha strikes twice after the break

Raphinha doubled the lead seven minutes after the restart with a low shot that deflected off Victor Lindelöf. He added the third from close range in the 64th minute after João Cancelo’s cross with the outside of his foot. Emery had introduced Leon Goretzka, Ibrahim Mbaye and Ross Barkley just after the hour. Goretzka later clipped the far post with a header, leaving Villa without a goal.[2]
