OpenAI is the anchor customer at two Firmus sites in Malaysia
Nvidia-backed Australian data centre company Firmus said on 8 September that it had signed a multi-year capacity agreement with OpenAI. OpenAI contracts dedicated compute at two AI factories in Malaysia and becomes the anchor customer of those two sites. Firmus contracted capacity across all customers now exceeds 900 MW.[1], [2]
Two of seven sites are operating, five are under development
The Firmus portfolio spans seven sites across Australia, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. Two of those seven sites are operating and five are under development. The company aims to bring the five development sites into service within 24 months. The two operating sites are in Australia and Singapore. The two OpenAI sites in Malaysia are among the five still under development.[1]
The sites combine Vera Rubin hardware with the HyperCube rig
Firmus says the sites combine Nvidia's Vera Rubin hardware and the Nvidia DSX platform. The company manufactures the HyperCube rig in New South Wales. Co-founder and co-chief executive Tim Rosenfield describes the deal as the moment Asia-Pacific becomes a producer of intelligence rather than only a consumer. Sachin Katti, OpenAI's vice-president of compute strategy, said the two sides expect to bring the capacity online together.[1]
