The work before the ensemble

Even the Birds is the first song from The Ocean Floor, the collaboration between Particle Kid and Daniel Lanois. Micah Nelson’s Particle Kid project joins Lanois across 11 songs, due through Loosegroove Records on 26 February 2027. Moog, other synthesizers and drum machines give the opening release a specific instrumental foundation. The arrangement provides a more useful starting point for this partnership than the two names on the cover.[1]

Nelson traces the song’s image to a day off during his 2023 tour with the Flaming Lips. A bird emerged from beneath a bridge and settled on a nearby tree rather than flying away. He describes that moment as the origin of a lyric about movement and remaining where one is. That is his account of the words’ beginning. The electronic instrumentation establishes the arrangement through which that image reaches a listener. Lyric and accompaniment meet within the same piece.[1]

The division of work at Bella Vista

The album took shape over 10 days at Lanois’ Bella Vista studio in Los Angeles. The pair’s recordings were combined with performances by bassist Aroyn Day and percussionist Kyle Crane. Bassist Daryl Johnson also contributed. Engineer Gerardo Ordonez and co-producer Wayne Lorenz add recording and production roles to the personnel. Describing a meeting between two artists should leave room for the ensemble that helped make it.[1]

The combination of electronic foundations and instrumental contributions suggests an arrangement built across layers. Bass and percussion may carry more structural weight than decorative additions to an otherwise finished song. Another possibility is that the players completed a structure already established by the pair. The announced personnel allow either working method; they direct attention towards the rhythmic relationships within the song.[1]

The routes to a listener

The release plan for The Ocean Floor excludes Spotify and Amazon Music. Bandcamp, other digital services, vinyl and CD remain among its announced routes. That choice makes a listener’s service relevant to reaching the same album. The recording personnel establish how the music was made; the release decision establishes where it can be found. These are two practical conditions of the album’s encounter with its audience.[1]

The pair’s concerts begin at Hollywood Forever in Los Angeles on 27 February 2027. The present musical starting point is the released Even the Birds and the album’s named players. A productive listening question is how the electronic rhythm, bass and percussion make room for one another. It keeps attention on an audible division of work and offers a concrete way into The Ocean Floor.[1]
