The Echo Chamber premieres in Spain at Seminci

Italian director Andrea Pallaoro presented The Echo Chamber, adapted from Bernardo Bertolucci’s final screenplay, at the Seminci film festival in Valladolid on 24 October.[1], [2]

The film received its Spanish premiere in the official competition of the 71st Valladolid International Film Week, known as Seminci. It had previously premiered worldwide at the Venice Film Festival. Bertolucci wrote the screenplay before his death in 2018; Ilaria Bernardini and Ludovica Rampoldi adapted it.[1]

Three characters share a London apartment

Luca Marinelli plays Leo, an Italian music producer living in London. Alicia Vikander plays Anne, who becomes his partner after treating him. Susan Sarandon appears as Ava May, a singer working with Leo on a return to music. The story follows relationships shaped by pain, care and emotional dependence within Leo’s apartment.[1]

Pallaoro retains the screenplay’s shifts in time

Pallaoro said the shifts between past and present were already in Bertolucci’s screenplay and helped explore the characters’ memories. He associated the echo in the title with different times intersecting. The director described the apartment as a cinematic opportunity: its architecture could communicate intimacy, control, presence and absence between the characters. He said Sarandon was his immediate choice for Ava and that she agreed to sing for the role.[1]
