Lancashire decide against a new deal

Lancashire, the English county cricket club, will not offer James Anderson a new contract. The decision leaves the veteran bowler’s playing future uncertain.[1], [2]

Sky Sports reports that the 44-year-old will have no playing agreement with Lancashire for 2027. He continued to represent the county after leaving England’s Test team and also captained it. The latest contract decision follows another season in which he contributed regularly to the bowling attack.[1]

Fifty wickets in his latest Championship season

Anderson took 50 wickets in the latest County Championship season, removing opposing batters from play. He had led Lancashire for part of 2025 and served as captain again in the current campaign. The county finished near the bottom of Division Two. Its leadership has also changed, with Richard Kenyon as chief executive and Paul Farbrace as director of cricket. The contract decision was first reported by The Times.[1]

England career ended before county career

Anderson played his final England Test against West Indies in July 2024. He finished with 704 wickets from 188 Tests, the highest wicket total for an England player in the format. One end of Lancashire’s Old Trafford ground carries his name. His county appearances continued after that international farewell. Whether he plays elsewhere or retires from the sport remains unresolved; the Lancashire decision itself settles only his contract at the club.[1]
