Smith returns to Dortmund for a second title

Ross Smith won the European Darts Championship in Dortmund, Germany, beating Martin Schindler 11-8 in the final. The Englishman regained the trophy he first won in 2022. Schindler became the first German finalist in an individual televised major tournament run by professional darts body PDC. He reached that stage in front of his home crowd but finished runner-up.[1], [2]

Smith collected 150,000 pounds for the victory. His first European title had also come in Dortmund, four years earlier. The champion had arrived in the final after eliminating Gerwyn Price, while Schindler had beaten Krzysztof Ratajski in the other semi-final. Both finalists played a quarter-final and a semi-final before meeting for the trophy on the last day.[1], [2]

Schindler cuts a six-leg deficit to two

Smith led 3-2 after the opening five legs, the individual games that decide a darts match. He then won the next session to extend his advantage to 8-2. Schindler took a leg back, but Smith responded and moved 9-3 ahead. The German then won four consecutive legs, reducing the deficit to 9-7. His comeback included finishes of 60, 116 and 127.[2]

Smith stopped that run by winning the 17th leg for a 10-7 lead. Schindler answered with a leg completed in 13 darts, bringing the score to 10-8. Smith began the 19th leg on his own throw and finished on double five. That last successful dart completed the 11-8 victory after Schindler had reduced a six-leg deficit to two.[2]

The finalists climb the rankings

Smith’s route included wins over Karel Sedlacek, Damon Heta and Luke Woodhouse before his 11-7 semi-final victory over Price. Schindler opened with wins against Wessel Nijman and Jermaine Wattimena. He then beat Jonny Clayton 10-1 in the quarter-finals, averaging 103.16 points per three darts and producing a highest checkout of 167. His semi-final against Ratajski ended 11-6.[1]

The title lifted Smith eight places to sixth in the PDC world rankings. Schindler climbed three places to 20th and secured qualification for the Grand Slam of Darts through his final appearance.[1]
