Terland’s late equaliser ends Manchester City’s winning start

Elisabeth Terland’s late equaliser earned Manchester United a 1-1 draw against Manchester City in the Women’s Super League. Khadija Shaw had opened the scoring after a goalless first half, but her attempted defensive header fell to Terland for the leveller. City’s perfect league start ended with a draw, and Chelsea finished the weekend ahead on goal difference.

United restrict City before the interval

Manchester United drew 1-1 with Manchester City in the Women’s Super League after Elisabeth Terland struck late to answer Khadija Shaw’s opener. The result ended City’s perfect start to the league season. City took a point from the derby but finished the weekend behind Chelsea on goal difference, while United occupied fourth place in the standings.[1], [2]

Eva Olid’s United limited City’s clear chances in a physical opening half. Ella Toone, Jess Park and Terland offered threats when the home side broke forward. City goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita helped keep United out, and the teams reached halftime at 0-0. United’s defensive work prevented City from turning their attacking possession into an early lead.[1], [2]

Shaw scores on her 100th league appearance

Shaw became more involved after the break and found room to turn against United defender Dominique Janssen. Shaw beat goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce to put the visitors ahead. The match was Shaw’s 100th appearance in the Women’s Super League, and the goal was her eighth of the campaign. Her finish changed the score after the teams had cancelled each other out before halftime.[1], [2]

United continued to create chances after falling behind. Jess Park struck the woodwork as United looked for a way back into the match. City failed to extend their lead during that period. The hosts therefore remained within one goal as the match approached its closing stages, with their attacking opportunities still requiring a finish to bring them level.[1], [2]

A defensive header falls to Terland

The equaliser followed a free-kick and a high delivery from Maya Le Tissier. Shaw attempted to head the ball clear in defence, but it dropped to Terland. The forward struck powerfully first time and found the net just before stoppage time. United had kept pursuing the match after Shaw’s goal and finally converted one of their opportunities.[1], [2]

Neither side scored again. Andrée Jeglertz’s City left with a draw after winning each of their opening league matches. United’s late response secured the shared point and kept their unbeaten run going across competitions. The derby finished with one goal apiece despite the contrasting second-half sequences: Shaw supplied City’s lead before Terland turned the attempted clearance into United’s equaliser.[1], [2]
