Holgado crosses a new threshold

Spain’s Daniel Holgado led Moto2 practice at the Qatar Grand Prix with a lap of 1 minute 55 seconds and 897 milliseconds. The Aspar team rider became the first in the class to complete a lap of Lusail in less than 1 minute 56 seconds. The leading laps arrive late

Championship leader Gonzalez had run near the front throughout the session and improved his own circuit record before Holgado’s decisive late lap. Guevara also climbed the order in the closing stages after running as low as 20th. He and Gonzalez both secured direct entry to the second qualifying segment. Celestino Vietti completed the top five, covered by less than three tenths of a second.[1]

Seven race winners lead the classification

Senna Agius finished sixth, with Malaysian Grand Prix winner David Alonso seventh on the other Aspar bike. All seven riders at the head of the classification had previously won a Moto2 race. Collin Veijer took eighth, Alonso Lopez ninth and Barry Baltus tenth. Holgado ended practice ahead of his teammate Alonso, with Saturday qualifying next on the Qatar weekend schedule.[1]
