Two institutions, one project

Indigenous Australian artist d harding will have a two-part exhibition presented by Dia Art Foundation, the New York art institution, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in Sydney. The Dia Chelsea presentation is scheduled to open in February 2027, followed by the Sydney exhibition in March. Both parts will continue into August, spanning the two cities in parallel.[1], [2]

Paintings made through transfer

For the Dia commission, harding is working with canvases inherited from fellow artist Gordon Bennett. The canvases are processed with earthen materials and transferred onto panels associated with particular places. Preparation included visits to Dia’s Land art sites in the American West, including Walter De Maria’s The Lightning Field, Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty and Nancy Holt’s Sun Tunnels, and draws on ancestral rock-art sites in Central Queensland, Australia.[1]

A first museum survey

Sydney’s presentation is harding’s first museum survey. It is organised around inheritance, visitation, embodiment and continuity. An expanded version of the wall composition Know them in correct judgement will be included. Harding made the work with extended family members in relation to their rock-art inheritance. Senior curator Anneke Jaspers described the artist’s practice as approaching sovereignty and the artistic canon from an Aboriginal perspective.[1]
