Two awards go to New Zealand teammates

Kaipo Olsen-Baker won the women’s player of the year award from World Rugby, the sport’s international governing body. Her New Zealand teammate Elinor-Plum King received the breakthrough player honour. The pair were surprised with live presentations after their national team’s match against France in Christchurch, New Zealand.[1], [2]

Olsen-Baker’s season and King’s first year are recognised

Olsen-Baker won a category that also included England’s Zoe Harrison and Megan Jones and Canada’s DaLeaka Menin. World Rugby highlighted her powerful carrying, athleticism and work in attack and defence. Chair Brett Robinson praised the consistency and influence she had shown through the season.[1]

King was recognised in her first international season. The openside flanker was selected ahead of France’s Pauline Barrat, Australia’s Amelia Whitaker and the United States’ Bella Vogel. The governing body singled out her defence and contribution at the breakdown, where players contest possession after a tackle.[1]

The women’s awards conclude on 2 November

The World Rugby women’s awards programme is scheduled to conclude on Monday, 2 November, with the try of the year and dream team announcements. Fans voted for the winning try from four efforts shortlisted by the International Rugby Players’ Association. The dream team is set to recognise international performers from across the season.[1]
