An award secured before the finale
American golfer Nelly Korda has won the Ladies Professional Golf Association’s Player of the Year award for the second time. Her rivals no longer have enough remaining tournament opportunities to pass her. The result was settled when entry closed for the ANNIKA, a tournament on the women’s professional tour. The 28-year-old earned this second award in her 10th tour season.[1], [2]
With four wins this season, Korda held a 75-point lead before the autumn Asian tournaments. She will receive the award at the tour’s ceremony on 17 November.[1]
Rivals run out of playing opportunities
Haeran Ryu needed two victories, a finish of second or better and another of eighth or better to remain in contention. She was runner-up at the BMW Ladies Championship but withdrew before the Maybank Championship began. Miyu Yamashita and Jeeno Thitikul each needed three wins; neither entered the ANNIKA, leaving only the TOTO Japan Classic and CME Group Tour Championship on their schedules.[1]
One point from the Hall of Fame
Player of the Year brings one Hall of Fame point, taking Korda to 26 against the entry requirement of 27. A regular tour victory is worth one point and a major title two. Korda still has the ANNIKA and CME Group Tour Championship to play. The Vare Trophy also awards a point, but she cannot win it this season because she has not met the minimum-round requirement.[1]
