A three-set breakthrough
Mika Stojsavljevic, a 17-year-old British tennis player, beat Sofia Kenin at the Hong Kong Open for her first singles main-draw victory on the women’s professional tour. She won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 against the former Australian Open champion and advanced to the second round.[1], [2]
The match featured 11 breaks of serve. Stojsavljevic moved 4-1 ahead in the deciding set, before Kenin recovered one break. The teenager then held serve to complete the win on her second match point. Kenin stood 224 places above her in the world rankings.[1]
A late place in the main draw
Stojsavljevic had lost in qualifying but received a place in the main draw when an opening became available. She said she learned she would be playing only an hour before the match. With little preparation time, she faced an opponent whose Grand Slam title she knew about; afterwards, she said she had believed in herself.[1]
Sönmez awaits in the second round
Her next opponent is Zeynep Sönmez, ranked 67th, with the match scheduled for 5 November. Stojsavljevic won the US Open girls’ singles title in 2024. In her first full tour season she has reached a quarter-final in Birmingham and three World Tennis Tour semi-finals, and beat Talia Gibson on her Billie Jean King Cup debut against Australia.[1]
