Qualcomm entered a multi-generation inference silicon job with Amazon
Qualcomm said on Tuesday that it is working with Amazon across multiple generations of customised silicon for large-scale AI data centres, covering inference parts and optical connectivity. The Register reports that Amazon Web Services tapped Qualcomm to develop customised silicon for AI inference and 1.6 terabit-per-second optical networking gear. The San Diego release gives no date for when the first parts reach data centres.[1], [2]
The release also names SerDes, optical signal processing and Bedrock
The San Diego release names advanced SerDes and optical digital signal processing technology alongside the customised inference silicon, and says Qualcomm runs electronic design automation workloads on Amazon Bedrock. Qualcomm chief executive Cristiano Amon said the company brings decades of leadership to the work. AWS vice-president Prasad Kalyanaraman said the two are delivering more performant, efficient and cost-effective infrastructure for customers.[1]
The Register puts the commitment ceiling at 60 billion dollars and 2036
According to The Register, Amazon's purchases and other commercial commitments under the agreement could total up to 60 billion dollars in payments through September 2036. Qualcomm's announcement names no financial terms and no deployment schedule. The Register also says the companies offered few details on the silicon itself. Neither Qualcomm nor Amazon said how many generations the collaboration covers, what it is worth, or when the first parts reach data centres.[2], [1]
